Abstract

This study examines how Multicultural Islamic Education influences behavioral transformation among inmates in Indonesian correctional institutions. As correctional institutions accommodate individuals from diverse religious, ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds, they provide a unique setting for investigating the role of Islamic education in fostering character development and social cohesion. The study addresses the following research question: How does Multicultural Islamic Education contribute to behavioral change among inmates within a multicultural correctional environment? A qualitative case study approach was employed to explore inmates' experiences and perceptions throughout the educational and rehabilitation process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis framework. The findings reveal that Multicultural Islamic Education significantly promotes positive behavioral change by strengthening values of tolerance, mutual respect, empathy, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence. These values are internalized through religious instruction, role modeling, intercultural dialogue, collaborative learning activities, and skills development programs. The effectiveness of the educational process is further supported by competent human resources, adequate learning materials, technological support, and a conducive institutional environment. The study concludes that Multicultural Islamic Education provides an effective character-building framework for inmate rehabilitation and social reintegration. Beyond the Indonesian context, this educational model offers valuable insights for developing more humane, inclusive, and sustainable rehabilitation programs that contribute to global citizenship and peaceful multicultural societies.
